Tromsø has always been on my list of places to go. It seemed like such an outpost, a bustling little town on top of the world, surrounded by fjords and the open sea. Plus, it always showed up on aurora reports because it was often right in the middle of the auroral oval. I couldn’t wait to get photos of the fjords with the aurora dancing above them and reflected in the waters below.
Well, those photos didn’t happen…and these nearly didn’t either. When I arrived in ‘The Paris of the North’ I was lucky to be able to see my hand in front of me, it was snowing that hard. In fact, I had to re-schedule my northern lights snowshoeing that night because it was so windy & snowy that it would have been a very unpleasant experience.
That snow continued almost unabated with the exception of this quick break in the clouds. As soon as I realised that there was a bit of blue sky, I walked down to the harbour and was greeted with this view…a view that made up for all the clouds up until that point!
Plenty of Tromsø landmarks are visible here, including the Tromsø Bridge, the Arctic Cathedral (across the harbour at the end of the bridge), the Fjellheisen cable car (which apparently has great views over the city but was closed for maintenance during my visit), and the Rica Ishavshotel (the building sticking out into the harbour to the right).
