Australia

I had my heart set on coming to the Land Down Under from around the age of 11. I finally studied abroad in Brisbane in 2005 and that was all she wrote. I got back here as soon as I could (after graduating university and backpacking in New Zealand) and I’m now an Australian citizen.

Photo Essay: Facepainting at the Body Art Carnivale

The second day of the Australian Body Art Carnivale had vastly differing categories sharing the painting tent: face painting and special effects. The face painters were allowed to paint intricate artworks down to the shoulders of their models, while the special effects artists were allowed to do pretty much anything they wanted, even creating a…

Photo Essay: The Australian Body Art Carnivale

Please note that this post does contain photos of topless girls, so it may not be ideal to browse through during work time. I’d like to think they’re tasteful photos though. Last weekend, artists from around Australia descended on Eumundi to take part in the annual Australian Body Art Carnivale. I’ve never seen an event…

My Four-Year Oziversary

I apologise — I know I said this blog would be updated while I was in New Zealand, but unfortunately, while I had already written the posts, I didn’t even have time to sort the photos and get the posts online while I was over there. So without further ado… Recently I hit yet another…

Photo of the Week: Quokka Quokka

This little guy is a quokka, a marsupial that can only be found on Western Australia’s Rottnest Island (and in very small areas of the Western Australian mainland). I personally think he looks a little bit like a combination of a wombat and a wallaby — he’s got the body of a wallaby and the…

I Was the Victim of a Drive-By Faith Healing

Last Thursday, I went to the first Brisbane Travel Massive event of the year. It was good fun, as usual, and I even got to meet a few bloggers like Jade from OurOyster.com and Emma Makepeace. I had a very obvious conversation starter as well — my giant leg brace for my broken leg. Yes,…

The Brisbane Floods: A Year On

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a year (and a week) since the devastating events of January 2011. So much has happened since then, but it still seems like just yesterday that I was glued to the TV watching events unfold. It seemed so surreal, yet I could walk 100m down the street…

Twenty Eleven in Numbers

After writing the summary of my travels in 2011 and reading A Dangerous Business’ year by the numbers, I got a bit curious, so I did a bit of adding up and came up with the following stats on how 2011 treated me. Flights: 18 Long haul flights: 9 Miles flown: 59222 (94755.2km) Airports: 9…
