Sunset at Esperanza

Locals getting in their last bit of beach time before darkness falls.

This was a photo I wasn’t even supposed to get! After my friend’s wedding in Puerto Rico, some friends and I all went over to Vieques, a small island off Puerto Rico’s east coast, to kayak on the bioluminescent bay. We met our tour guide near the beach at Esperanza, where he told us that we could wander for a while because the other people on our tour were running late. I’m very glad they were late because we got to watch the sun go down and the Christmas lights strung all across the main street light up. Latin music was pumping out of one of the bars near the shore and everyone around us was chatting in Spanish. It felt like a truly different world to Puerto Rico, only a few miles away, and it’s one of my favourite memories from a very memorable trip.
